Adopt a Stream Foundation

Ancient Forest Education Foundation

 

A non-profit group dedicated to preserving the remaining ancient forest ecosystems of Western Washington, especially those on public lands. We believe that education is the key to preservation. Our focus is to familiarize people with the unique plants that grow in the ancient forest ecosystem and to teach the traditional beneficial uses of these plants. We offer plant identification field trips out to a low elevation ancient forest in the Western Washington Cascades and in-city classes on preparing your own homemade herbal remedies using native plants, including oils, salves, and medicinal tinctures.

Cascades Conservation Partnership

 

An unprecedented three-year campaign to purchase and protect over 75,000 acres of privately owned forests that link the Alpine Lakes to Mount Rainier. This effort will protect most of the remaining old-growth forests left on private land in this region. Much of this old-growth is threatened with logging within the next one to three years. These forests and corridor lands are critical habitat for gray wolf, grizzly bear, pine marten, fisher, northern goshawk, great gray owl, northern spotted owl, and many other species.

Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition

 

Formed by an alliance of community, environmental and small business groups affected by ongoing pollution and cleanup plans for the Duwamish River. Our mission is to ensure a Duwamish River cleanup that is accepted by and benefits the community and is protective of fish, wildlife and human health. We are a formal "community advisory group" recognized by EPA and representing the interests of the community. We have received funding to hire a Technical Advisor to review all cleanup related studies and plans. We are involved in all aspects of the proposed cleanup and are working to ensure that the cleanup meets community standards.

We work to educate the community by involving volunteers in habitat restoration projects such as removing fish passage barriers, planting native trees and shrubs along streams, creating side-channels for overwintering habitat for juvenile salmon, fencing livestock from streams and installing in-stream structures (large woody debris) to create diversity in the streams.

Nature Conservancy of Washington

 

A private non-profit conservation organization committed to preserving plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. The conservancy owns manages 1,600 nature preserves nationwide and 29 in Washington.

North Cascades Conservation Council

 

Keeps government officials, environmental organizations, and the general public informed about issues affecting the Greater North Cascades Ecosystem. Action is pursued through legislative, legal, and public participation channels to protect the lands, waters, plants and wildlife.

ONE/Northwest

 

("Online Networking for the Environment") is a non-profit based in Seattle that provides technology assistance to conservation activists and organizations in Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. In a nutshell, we help people get "online" and using email, the World Wide Web, and other electronic networking tools to help protect the Northwest environment. Also offers a directory that includes pretty much every conservation organization in the Pacific Northwest, including Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon.

Orca Conservancy

 

Their mission is to inform the general public about the grace and capabilities of Orcinus orca, to ommunicate scientific knowledge of the species, and to actively protect the whales' natural habitats. Further, Orca Conservancy is committed to raising awareness concerning whales and dolphins in captivity, and to exploring the feasibility of returning captive cetaceans to their natural habitats.
